Sunday 24th September 2017 – L’Etape Cycle Challenge
HUGE thanks to Roy Challen & his 117 mile cycle challenge at L’Etape London on Sunday 23rd September. It was great weather on the day and we know Roy had been training hard for the big occasion.
So far he’s raised an amazing £150 but his Just Giving page is still open so do please donate a fiver or tenner if you can.
We are incredibly grateful to Roy for offering to raise money for The MGDF – all donations go towards raising awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and also to supporting the diabetes unit at Watford General Hospital who look after both Type 1 and Type 2 patients.
Our latest projects involve raising funds to support the unit’s continued training of their Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Diabetes Dieticians, as well as helping to fund vital, specialist equipment to help treat patients more quickly.
Wednesday 13th September 2017 – Charity Golf Day
The Michael Green Diabetes Foundation (MGDF) held its first charity golf day at Hartsbourne Country Club, Bushey with former Ryder Cup Captain and Player, Bernard Gallacher, OBE attending as guest of honour.
Speaking at the event Bernard Gallacher said: “It was great to see everyone out on the course getting behind such a brilliant charity. It’s important that we raise as much awareness as possible of Diabetes and the consequences that can arise if you have a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Golf is a great form of exercise and I hope today’s fundraiser has helped raise much needed funds and awareness.”
A record 104 players took part in the charity event and four-ball led by David Rosenberg, came away victorious with a score of 90 points. All members of the winning team are members of Hartsbourne.
Gary Silver, Club Captain and event organiser said: “I chose to host the golf day as I have a personal connection with Diabetes. Michael Green was my close friend for many years and my son, Jordan has Type 1 Diabetes. The charity raises awareness of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and fundraises for The Michael Clements Diabetes Centre at Watford General Hospital. I’m delighted that our first golf day was so well supported by so many businesses and individuals.”
He continued: “Special thanks to our main sponsors AMA Waterways, Currie Motors and The Estate Office; Hartsbourne Golf & Country Club; Bernard Gallacher, OBE for presenting the trophies and Professor Steve Barnett, Chair of West Herts Hospital NHS Trust for drawing the raffle. Although the final figure hasn’t been confirmed we are expecting approximately £30,000* to have been raised.”
Many thanks to all our supporters and those who donated fantastic auction and raffle prizes. Special thanks to AMA Waterways for their very generous sponsorship of the golf balls and goody bags on the day, as well as a fantastic Golf Cruise auction prize. Thanks also to our trusty team of volunteers on the day – you were all brilliant and we simply couldn’t have done it without you!

Tuesday 23rd May 2017 – Chairman’s Presentation
It was a real honour to be invited to the Election of the new Chair of Watford Council, Jaktar Singh as the former Chair, Councillor Darren Walford stood down.
It was a formal occasion but there was good humour as the proceedings took place. The culmination of the event was the presentation of the cheques to Darren’s two nominated charities, for whom he has raised a record-breaking amount.
Each charity received £4172.33. Watford Workshop and The MGDF are both very fortunate to have had Darren and his lovely wife, Tanya working so hard to raise funds for us throughout their year in office. We offer our heartfelt thanks for all their efforts and to everyone who has supported their events.
Friday 5th May 2017 – Chairman’s Civic Reception
As one of his nominated charities, we were delighted to be invited to the Chair of Watford Council’s Civic Reception at West Herts Golf Club.
Chairman Darren Walford and his Consort Tanya were the perfect hosts at this prestigious event, welcoming notable guests, friends and family, as well as his chosen charity representatives which included ourselves as well as Watford Workshop.
We were entertained with music and table magic and after a delicious three-course dinner came the raffle with many donated prizes from local companies, sports centre, hotels and restaurants.
Many thanks to Darren and Tanya for making us feel very welcome and for helping us to bring our charity to a wider audience.
Saturday 25th March 2017 – Wot? No Fish!!
at The Radlett Centre
Danny Braverman’s solo show tells the funny and moving story of how he discovered the lost art of his Great-uncle Ab. Wot? No Fish!! is an extraordinary story about love and art, history and fish balls.
Huge thanks to Danny for bringing this charming show to Radlett and sharing his story with us.
We also held a raffle on the night and altogether, with your help, of course, we raised £8000, split between The MGDF and our partners for this event, Jellybabies.
Many thanks to all who donated raffle prizes and those who bought tickets and helped on the night – the occasion was a huge success and we look forward to holding more events at The Radlett Centre again soon.
